Attack of the Crab Monsters was one of nine films that Corman released in 1957 that’s a film every month and a half! Since everyone knew what to expect from everyone else, the films were able to be finished within the narrow time and budget restraints under which these productions were made. Having familiar faces on the crew wasn’t just a comfort issue for Corman because he’d worked with these people before, Corman knew how they worked, and he was able to make these films so quickly because he already knew most of the cast and crew’s strengths and weaknesses. Charles Gross, Jr., who’d edited It Conquered the World, joined Corman for Attack of the Crab Monsters, as did Curley Batson, who did the film’s makeup, just as he’d done for Apache Woman. Ronald Stein did the music, as he’d already done for Corman several times (starting with Apache Woman), and Floyd Crosby was back to shoot the film, as he had already done for a couple of Corman’s westerns and would go on to do for a total of nearly two dozen of Corman’s films. Griffith, who had already written a few films for Corman and would go on write over a dozen for him in total. Attack of the Crab Monsters was written by Charles B. This is because Corman had pulled together a stock company of sorts with whom he enjoyed making films, made up of people both in front of and, especially, behind the camera. Of course, one of the scientists decides that he needs to investigate right then and there, so he goes down into the cave…and then the crab monsters show up.Īlthough Attack of the Crab Monsters was released by Allied Artists, it looks, feels, and sounds exactly like the films Roger Corman was making for American International Pictures at the time. Thinking that the scientist from the earlier team must still be alive somewhere on the island, they investigate and find the scientist’s voice coming the newly-formed cave they’d passed earlier. That night, two of the scientists hear the voice of one of the scientists from the first team that disappeared earlier calling to them, waking them from sleep. Once back at the house, the technician tries to get through on the radio to let the Navy know of the accident, but he can’t get through to anyone, as a big storm is brewing and messing up the radio signals. On their way back to the house they’ll be living in, some of the scientists notice that the earthquake has opened up a big hole in the ground in the middle of the island, but they decide to wait until the next day to investigate the new cave, since it’s getting dark.
Then, as the seaplane flies off to take the rest of Navy guys back to whatever base they came from, it blows up, killing everyone on board. As the seaplane is preparing to leave, an earthquake hits, shaking everyone up a bit. Once the Navy’s dropped them off, they leave two demolition experts with the scientific team (along with a pretty substantial arsenal of dynamite and hand grenades). They’re following a team from their scientific institute that had vanished without a trace a few months earlier, with the prevailing thought about their disappearance being that they’d been washed away by a typhoon. The team is there to study the effects of radiation on the animal and plant life of the island, as the fallout from a particularly large test blast several years earlier on an atoll in the Pacific had blanketed it. Using a seaplane and inflatable boats, some guys from the Navy drop off a team of five scientists (including Mel Welles from the original The Little Shop of Horrors) and a technician (played by Russell Johnson, Gilligan’s Island’s Professor) on an isolated Pacific island.
